5 Sikorsky, Igor Ivanovich
SUBJECT AREA: Aerospace[br]b. 25 May 1889 Kiev, Ukrained. 26 October 1972 Easton, Connecticut, USA[br]Russian/American pioneer of large aeroplanes, flying boats, and helicopters.[br]Sikorsky trained as an engineer but developed an interest in aviation at the age of 19 when he was allowed to spend several months in Paris to meet French aviators. He bought an Anzani aero-engine and took it back to Russia, where he designed and built a helicopter. In his own words, "It had one minor technical problem—it would not fly—but otherwise it was a good helicopter".Sikorsky turned to aeroplanes and built a series of biplanes: by 1911 the 5–5 was capable of flights lasting an hour. Following this success, the Russian-Baltic Railroad Car Company commissioned Sikorsky to build a large aeroplane. On 13 May 1913 Sikorsky took off in the Grand, the world's first four-engined aeroplane. With a wing span of 28 m (92 ft) it was also the world's largest, and was unique in that the crew were in an enclosed cabin with dual controls. The even larger Ilia Mourometz flew the following year and established many records, including the carriage of sixteen people. During the First World War many of these aircraft were built and served as heavy bombers.Following the revolution in Russia during 1917, Sikorsky emigrated first to France and then the United States, where he founded his own company. After building the successful S-38 passenger-carrying amphibian, the Sikorsky Aviation Corporation became part of the United Aircraft Corporation and went on to produce several large flying boats. Of these, the four-engined S-42 was probably the best known, for its service to Hawaii in 1935 and trial flights across the Atlantic in 1937.In the late 1930s Sikorsky once again turned his attention to helicopters, and on 14 September 1939 his VS-300 made its first tentative hop, with Sikorsky at the controls. Many improvements were made and on 6 May 1941 Sikorsky made a record-breaking flight of over 1½ hours. The Sikorsky design of a single main lifting rotor combined with a small tail rotor to balance the torque effect has dominated helicopter design to this day. Sikorsky produced a long series of outstanding helicopter designs which are in service throughout the world.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsChevalier de la Légion d'honneur 1960. "Бунт Стеньки" я читал ему так часто, что он уже свободно рассказывал книгу своими словами, страницу за страницей, с начала до конца. (М. Горький, Коновалов) — Thus, day by day, two months passed. Konovalov and I did a great deal of talking and a great deal of reading. I read him Stenka Razin 's Uprising so often that he could tell the story in his own words, page by page, from beginning to end.

10 Miller, Patrick
SUBJECT AREA: Ports and shipping[br]b. 1731 Glasgow, Scotlandd. 9 December 1815 Dalswinton, Dumfriesshire, Scotland[br]Scottish merchant and banker, early experimenter in powered navigation and in ship form.[br]In his own words, Patrick Miller was "without a sixpence" in his early youth; this is difficult to prove one way or another as he ended his life as Director and Deputy Governor of the Bank of Scotland. One thing is clear however, that from his earliest days, in common with most of his counterparts of the late eighteenth century, he was interested in experimental and applied science. Having acquired a substantial income from other sources, Miller was able to indulge his interest in ships and engineering. His first important vessel was the trimaran Edinburgh, designed by him and launched at Leith in 1786. Propulsion was man-powered using paddle wheels positioned in the spaces between the outer and central hulls. This led to several trials of similar craft on the Forth in the 1780s, and ultimately to the celebrated Dalswinton Loch trials. In 1785 Miller had purchased the Dumfriesshire estate of Dalswinton and commenced a series of experiments on agricultural development and other matters. With the help of William Symington he built a double-hull steamship with internal paddle wheels which was tested on the Loch in 1788. The 7.6 m (25 ft) long ship travelled at 5 mph (8 km/h) on her trials, and according to unsubstantiated tradition carried a group of well-known people including the poet Robert Burns (1759–1796).Miller carried out many more important experiments and in 1796 obtained a patent for the design of shallow-drafted ships able to carry substantial cargo on flat bottoms. His main achievement may have been to stimulate William Symington, who at the beginning of the nineteenth century went on to design and build two of the world's first important steamships, each named Charlotte Dundas, for service on the Forth and Clyde Canal.[br]Further ReadingH.Philip Spratt, 1958, The Birth of the Steamboat, London: Griffiths.
The Hadeeth Qudsi are hadeeths in which the Prophet says that Allah says so and so. The meaning of these hadeeths was revealed to the Prophet but he put them in his own words, unlike the Qur'an which is the word of Almighty Allah and the Prophet conveyed it exactly as it was revealed to him. -
п.) crumble into dust; go to rack and ruin; go to hell (to blazes, to pot, to the devil, to the dogs)- Ежели одно дерево высохнет или, скажем, одна корова падёт, и то жалость берёт, а каково, добрый человек, глядеть, коли весь мир идёт прахом? (А. Чехов, Свирель) — 'If a single tree withers away, or let us say a single cow dies, it makes one sorry, but what will it be, good man, if the whole world crumbles into dust?'
(А. Фадеев, Разгром) — He dropped forward wearily into the saddle, as if crushed by the heavy load of his own words. 'Everything's gone to blazes. We lost forty men. We haven't had such a loss the whole summer.'
(И. Грекова, Кафедра) — It might have been intended to last for centuries, but in reality all the extravagant decorative details turned out to be extremely flimsy. Only two or three years after it had been built and occupied, the building had started going to rack and ruin.
2) (заканчиваться впустую, даром, безрезультатно) come to nothing (naught); go up in smoke; fall to the ground; come unstuck- Вы не представляете, как рискованно то, что предлагает Беридзе!... (В. Ажаев, Далеко от Москвы) — 'You can't imagine how risky Beridze's proposal is!.. How can I convince you? All the precious resources that we are now expending will go up in smoke.'
